A
Acronym (ak-roe-nim)
An acronym is a word formed from the first letters of other words, for example, LED from Light Emitting Diode.
Adjective (ad-jek-tiv)
An adjective is a part of a sentence that modifies a noun by describing something about the noun.
Adverb (ad-verrb)
An adverb is a part of a sentence that modifies or limits a verb by describing aspects of the verb.
Analysis (a-nal-i-siss)
Analysis is the process of explaining an entity or idea by examining it in terms of its various parts. The plural of analysis is analyses (ie a-nall-i-sees).
Analytical (anna-lit-i-kal)
Analytical means to proceed by way of analysis.
Annotation (anna-tay-shun)
An annotation is a note (often written in the margins of a text) explaining or commenting on some part of a written text.
Antecedent (ann-te-see-dent)
Antecedent means to come before or be logically prior to something else, usually an idea, statement or proposition.
Anxiety (ang-zy-e-tee)
Anxiety is some level of distress caused by a fear of some future state of affairs.
Apathy (appa-thee)
Apathy is a lack of energy, emotion or interest in what others generally find important.
Apostrophe (a-poss-troe-fee)
An apostrophe is a symbol that usually indicates either (1) missing letters in a word as in can't, hasn't, isn't, and so on, or (2) the possessive case as in monarch's crown, monarchs' palaces and so on.
Appendix (a-pend-iks)
An appendix is subject matter, usually statistical or explanatory material, that supplements the main body of a text. The plural of appendix is appendices (ie a-pend-i-sees).
Argument (arr-gue-ment)
An argument is a process of reasoning in which the presenter aims to persuade others of the truth of his or her views.
Assessment (a-sess-ment)
Assessment is the means to evaluate or measure a student’s progress through a set course of study.
Assignment (a-sine-ment)
An assignment is a particular task that forms a proper part of an assessment procedure.
Auditory (or-di-tor-ree)
Auditory means relating to hearing.
